Treatment step by step

    Diagnosis

    An X-ray shows the extent of the inflammation and the shape of the root canals. Together we decide whether treating the tooth makes sense.

  2. 2

    Anaesthesia and opening the tooth

    The treatment is done under local anaesthesia. The tooth is isolated with a rubber dam so that bacteria from saliva cannot enter the canal.

  3. 3

    Cleaning the canals

    The root canals are cleaned of inflammation and bacteria. For complex canal systems we use the microscope, which helps find even hidden canals.

  4. 4

    Filling the canals and restoring the tooth

    The cleaned canals are filled tightly so the inflammation cannot return. During the same treatment the tooth is restored so it can withstand chewing.

  5. 5

    Follow-up

    We check with an X-ray that the inflammation in the bone has healed.

Frequently asked questions about root canal treatment

Does root canal treatment hurt?
No. The treatment is done under local anaesthesia. In most cases root canal treatment is exactly what removes the pain that brought the patient in.
When is the microscope used?
Root canals are fractions of a millimetre wide. In most cases standard instruments are enough. For complex or hidden canal systems the clinic has a root canal microscope, and then we use it.
How many visits will I need?
Usually one to three visits. With extensive inflammation there may be more.
What happens if root canal treatment is left undone?
The inflammation spreads to the root tip and the jawbone. Eventually the tooth has to be extracted and replaced with an implant or a denture, which costs more than saving the tooth.
Does a root-treated tooth need a crown?
Often yes, because a root-treated tooth is more fragile. We decide based on the condition of the tooth and tell you in the treatment plan in advance.
